My name is Ezra Ratshilo, also known as Ezra Red, and I am a visual artist born in the vibrant township of Soweto in 1985. Growing up in a culturally rich environment, I was exposed to a wide range of artistic expressions from a young age. This early exposure played a significant role in shaping my creative sensibilities, nurturing the spark that would later ignite my passion for visual art.
My artistic journey took a serious leap during the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. As the world grappled with isolation, uncertainty, and upheaval, I turned to art as a means of personal expression and connection. It was during this time that my passion for visual art truly emerged and became a central part of my life.
My artwork is characterised by bold use of colour and a unique approach to conveying complex emotions through non-representational forms. Each piece I create tells a story—a narrative woven from the threads of my own experiences and the universal human condition, with a particular focus on women and children. At its core, my art reflects the daily struggles and joys of life, offering a lens through which to explore and celebrate resilience and beauty.
My journey from my upbringing in Soweto to my current exploration of the art world continues to leave an indelible mark. Through my work, I aim to inspire others to find solace and purpose in creativity, reminding us all that even in the face of adversity, beauty and meaning can be discovered through self-expression.
As my artistic exploration grows, I remain committed to the belief that art has the power to heal, inspire, and transcend.
