About the artist:

My name is Timothy Chatupa, and I am a self-taught visual artist born in Chavuma, Zambia. My work explores the depths of human emotion, historical memory, and the subconscious mind. I use charcoal, graphite, ink, and other traditional media to craft thought-provoking compositions that aim to evoke a deeply visceral response in those who view them.

I draw inspiration from artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Jono Dry, whose approaches to form, emotion, and expression resonate strongly with me. My creative process is grounded in a constant dialogue between chaos and harmony, and I seek to reflect the layered complexities of the human experience in every piece I create.

For me, art is not just visual, it’s a form of conversation, bridging the past and present, realism and abstraction, structure and spontaneity. I’m fascinated by the unseen forces, emotional, cultural, and spiritual, that shape our individual and collective lives. My art is my way of making sense of those elements and inviting others to do the same.

I was honoured to take part in the Cynthia Zuku Young Artist Award, which has been an important step in my development. I continue to refine my craft through ongoing series and collections, always experimenting and expanding the visual language I use to tell stories.

Though I’ve not received formal training, I’ve dedicated myself to continual learning, practice, and honest expression. Everything I’ve built as an artist comes from deep introspection and a commitment to my vision.

As a featured artist on Afriartspace.com, I’m excited to share my work with a wider audience and contribute to the dynamic and evolving narrative of African contemporary art, one that challenges, heals, and inspires.
