Artistic Vision :
In the heart of Lagos, Nigeria, lies the vibrant community of Saga, nestled along the Epe coastline. Once a haven of tranquility, where the rhythmic ebb and flow of the tide serenaded the shores, Saga now faces a silent, insidious threat: the relentless encroachment of water hyacinth.
This invasive plant, a silent testament to the changing climate, has transformed the once serene lagoon into a tangled, suffocating mass of green. Its tendrils creep across the water’s surface, choking out sunlight and oxygen, casting a pall of gloom over the vibrant tapestry of life that once thrived beneath.
The villagers of Saga, once a harmonious community in sync with the rhythm of the lagoon, now find their livelihoods and traditions under siege. Fishermen struggle to navigate the treacherous maze of hyacinth, their nets snagged and their catches dwindling. The lagoon, once a source of sustenance and livelihood, now threatens to become a watery tomb.
Technique :
My medium is Oil Colour, and my unique technique is the dry brush method
Significance and Inspiration :
I was inspired after when I visited the Saga community at Epe, due to their climate change, the water hyacinth 🪻 made it hard for people at Saga to navigate and perform their daily activities ( fishing ). So after I witnessed the whole event, I was inspired to create this beautiful piece
Versatility :
My works can fit in any space due to their size, and also add value to where they’re displayed
