My name is Willard Magiga, born on May 13, 2002, in the District of Masvingo, Zimbabwe, where I grew up. I am a self-taught artist who discovered my passion for drawing in 2009 when I was in Grade 2. Over the years, I have focused on all types of pencil drawings. My artistic journey began at an early age, and I have continued to develop my skills independently, using my experiences and surroundings to inspire my work.
I have not attended formal art school, and I am entirely self-taught. After completing my O’ Level studies in Masvingo, I moved to Harare in 2021 for self-employment, working as a barber and hairdresser. This allowed me to earn the capital needed to purchase art materials such as pencils and supplies. For three years, I used my income to support myself and pursue my passion for drawing, focusing mainly on human portraits. In 2024, I met the internationally acclaimed artist Keith Zenda, who inspired me to transition into painting. I now work under his mentorship at his art studio in Domboshava, where he provides me with materials like paints, canvases, and frames, as well as invaluable knowledge about mixed media art.
Since meeting Keith Zenda, I have ventured into mixed media art, blending acrylic paints with braids on canvas. I find this combination unique, and I am one of the few artists in the world exploring this style. The support and guidance I receive from Keith Zenda are shaping me into an artist with a distinctive approach, and I am excited about continuing to develop my artistic practice. I am now focused on making art my main source of income and using my creations to inspire others.
My work primarily explores human emotions, experiences, and identity through unique mixed media techniques. By combining braids with acrylic paint, I aim to create a tactile and visually dynamic representation of life, culture, and personal expression. This art style reflects both my passion and the uniqueness of the medium, and I believe it can resonate deeply with those who encounter it.
While I am still early in my artistic career, meeting Keith Zenda and being introduced to painting has been a defining moment in my artistic journey. I have grown tremendously through his mentorship, and my goal is to be recognised internationally for my distinctive art. I aspire to not only continue learning but also to share my knowledge with others.
My ultimate dream is to give back to my community. I plan to establish an art studio where I can provide materials, guidance, and opportunities for individuals of all ages to explore their creativity. Art has given me a path to express myself, and I want to ensure that others can have the same opportunity. When I’m not working on my art, I enjoy traveling and swimming, as these activities provide new perspectives that inspire my creative process.
